Costs of having a baby

baby-costsOne thinks that medical costs are all that we should be concerned about. Not true. There are additional costs such as:

  • Medication (pre, during and post pregnancy)
    • prenatal vitamins
  • Baby room
  • Baby clothes
  • Baby gear
  • Mommy stuff
    • breast pump & accessories
    • nipple cream etc.
  • “Maternity” wear
    • I did not end up buying maternity clothes. I lived in boots, tights and long tops (thankfully am mostly pregnant through Winter)
  • Underwear
    • preggie bras and panties – midway
    • preggie bras and panties – third trimester and post baby delivery
  • Shoes
  • Post pregnancy clothes for mommy
  • Grocery bill
    • one cannot eat the normal food we are used to, special healthier food is required
  • Doctors bill if they are not contracted with medical aid
  • Hospital bills if your hospital does not cover the length of your stay
  • Baby shower
    • You may not throw one, but your hubby will certainly be contributing to it
  • Preggie books if you don’t get some from your baby shower
  • Travel costs for parents to visit
  • Increased grocery bill – stocking up before baby comes
